The Royal Canal Greenway – A Journey Through History

The Royal Canal Greenway is one of Ireland's most spectacular cycling and walking trails, stretching 130 km from Maynooth to Cloondara, passing through the heart of Longford and Westmeath. Originally built between 1790 and 1817, the Royal Canal was designed to transport people and goods between Dublin and the River Shannon. It played an important role in Ireland's economy, carrying everything from Guinness, grain, timber, turf, coal, livestock, and everyday supplies to towns and villages along its route. Before the arrival of the railways, the canal was a vital transport link, with horse-drawn barges quietly making their way across the Midlands.

As rail travel became faster during the 19th century, commercial traffic on the canal gradually declined. Parts of the canal fell into disuse, becoming overgrown and largely forgotten for many years. Thanks to an ambitious restoration project led by Waterways Ireland, the old towpaths have been transformed into the wonderful Royal Canal Greenway we enjoy today—a safe, accessible route where history and nature meet.
