Cycle the National Famine Way from Ballymahon Greenway Cycles

The National Famine Way is one of Ireland's most moving cycling and walking trails, following the 165 km journey of 1,490 men, women, and children who were forced to leave Strokestown Park in 1847 during the Great Irish Famine. Their poignant walk brought them to Dublin, where they emigrated on famine ships. Today the trail finishes at the Famine Statues beside EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum in Dublin Docklands.

The route is marked by more than 30 pairs of bronze children's shoes, inspired by the story of 12-year-old Daniel Tighe. These powerful sculptures symbolise every step taken by the emigrants and guide walkers and cyclists along this unforgettable heritage trail. 

A large section of the trail follows the beautiful Royal Canal Greenway, making it ideal for safe, traffic-free cycling through the heart of Ireland's Hidden Heartlands.
